Two days off and anywhere to go....

Donavan worked all weekend and I missed being at home for a BBQ, but with two days off we were determined to make the best of it! Sunday night after a long day of work for Mr. Valenzuela and a particularly frustrating day for me, we headed to Peaches for a cocktail :) Next thing you know, we were in a private party for a new clothing store opening up, sweet!!

Monday morning we woke up to the sound of rain, again, not that I really mind! We headed into town in the Blue Oyster Revival to do some shopping (yayy! But it wasn't for me!) and have lunch...it was there I was introduced to Döner Kebap, yummy in my tummy! It's a warm pocket stuffed with marinated chicken, lettuce, tomato, pickled cabbage and a creamy dill sauce...

Chicken on the kebab...

Too busy chowing down, I forgot to take a picture :)

After lunch we went H&M (*sigh...) now that my man is back the desire to wander around a store touching all the wonderful fabrics and take in the colors is gone! What?! I know I know, it's a shame...I was SO bored as Mr. GQ was having a ball! We finished up with some errands and a cruise around town...we ended the night cuddled on the couch in an Angry Birds tournament!

Tuesday...Rise and Shine, well not so much...we got woken up with a phone call saying the T-Mobile guy was on his way to the gate...a whole 2 days early! But now we have WiFi and didn't sleep the day away...it worked out. We've been wanting to go to the Partnach Gorge and Olympia Skistadion since we got here but haven't had the time. We stopped by a fish market and bakerëi (bakery) to gather some picnic supplies, loaded up our backpack and headed out! The 1936 Winter Olympics were held here and the long jump stadium is still used for training and the Annual January 1st Long Jump Competition...which I am going to make a point to see in person while we're here! The stadium is aaaamazing...I looked at historical pictures, looks exactly the same!

Donavan got this great panoramic view with an App on his iPad!!!

Then we walked along a river and through the countryside to the entrance of the gorge...€3 a person, but everything here costs money, so why not a hike, right?! I would give you some details of the gorge, but I can't read any of the signs :)

Here's a pic of my handsome guy...the scenery isn't so bad either...

Inside the gorge was realllllly dark and cold, water was dripping on us from the inside of the rocks and I kept imagining I would slip off the 3 ft wide path and get swept away by the rushing river....needless to say, I didn't but no way would I bring my kids...the German's don't seem to have that fear.

The super dark 'tunnel' we walked through...I had to use my flash to see!

These pictures don't do it justice, there was no way to fit the river up to the sky in a frame....

We finally made it out....to this....Totally worth it!

We ate our picnic lunch and created our own 'rock tower'....

Another panoramic shot...

It took us about 3 hours round trip and was a relaxing way to spend our day, we can't wait to go back when the river is frozen and ice sickles are hanging along the path! Here's one last pic from our day....

Okay, I lied...just cuz we're so cute...ha!

Donavan made me 'pose' with this lonely berry...

Okay, THIS is the last one, I promise...it looks like were standing in front of a green screen and the background is digitally added....it is not....this is the real thing!!

Thanks for reading and following us as we journey through the next 3 years...we are so happy to be together and enjoying every minute! Love to you all and we miss you!

  1. Yay! I love seeing the you two enjoying your time exploring Germany. It's beautiful!!!

Was the weather a nice temperature- looks like you aren't wearing snow clothes yet. I am a "fan" of Edelweiss Resort on FB and they keep saying that Fall is the most beautiful season there. I need to know... to plan MY trip.

You said everything costs money to do- even hiking- makes me thankful for our US National Parks and realize why there are always so many foreigners visiting them!

Kate, what have you found that you miss being able to buy at the market? Are you able to cook like you do in the States? You mentioned shopping and Donavan's fondness for clothes- have you found something you want to start "collecting" from your Station-duty in Germany? Rachel has a friend that was stationed in Germany and collected beautiful Polish pottery -it's chunky white with ornately painted cobalt blue designs and small flowers-mostly serving pieces, platters, large bowls, etc. I've seen it in lots of touristy places here and admired it. Or maybe clocks? Table linens? Pick one and start collecting!

Donavan did a great job with the cool panoramic photos- very cool! How close are the Gorge and Stadium from your apartment? How far is the Black Forest from you? Grandma and Grandpa Gunther said that is one of their favorite places in Germany. Also the Neuschwanstein's Castle- I recently saw incredible pictures of it in the snow! I picked up another used book- Traveling the Eurorail. Would you like it when I'm finished?

  2. Hi Ma! Yes the weather is amazing, it's in the 70's most days, it's my favorite thing so far! As far as the commissary it's the lack of variety that's hard to get used to, not so much I can't find what I want, it's not the brand I'm looking for. I'm getting good at reading the labels, some even in German! Cooking for right now is like cooking in a vacation condo, it's possible and I do it, but I am anxiously awaiting the arrival of " my kitchen" ...the other day I had a break down, I had cut 3 of my fingers because the one knife we have is dull and I have to use a plate for a cutting board...the knife kept sliding around and before I knew it, my onion was covered in blood :/ But it is what it is...and me, the collector of things, has not found anything to collect! I just think about moving and how much work it is to transport my "things" hahaha!! But I need to find something to represent our travels. The gorge and stadium are about a 10-15 minute drive from us, there is a bike path that we're going to do next time! I'm going to google the Black Forest and castle, maybe we'll go this weekend!!

  3. Adapting and flexibility are what the experts say are key to longevity and happiness in life. You are certainly getting the opportunity to exercise those qualities! I'm so proud of you, my daughter. We love hearing from you and your daily life. You are always in our thoughts. Boom!- just had an earthquake! I'm a bit dizzy now-just a quick sideways slam- Anyway, we're missing you and look forward to the next installment of your adventures. Love, Mom
